Devis Grebu

Grebu's art is a constant commentary on himself and on the world and on those who use it for diverse ends. His world is marked by what he has called "a strange alliance between tragedy and comedy". His images turn towards en- vironment and govern- ment; towards men and women and to the art of art. They reflect the mind and the mind's reflections of the mind...

... The personalized international Diaspora has, with the progress towards old age, become magnified in anticipated memory - the street corner is the feared anticipated final home. The task remains, along the way: to entertain us and to make us think - and Grebu does both, superbly.

"The International Jew" is an idea derived from historical circumstance, and a phrase engendered in order to demonize Jews in a secular, rather than theological, manner. The phrase refers, in its negative intentions, to the presence of Jews across the planet who, wherever they reside, seem always to have a section of their souls focussed away from their place of dwelling - towards the spiritual centre of Jewish reality, Eretz Yisrael. The sneer behind the phrase reflects the doubt of Jewish loyalty to their place of residence, as it denies the right to Jews to feel that they are at one with their place of residence. Understood in positive terms, though, the idea reflects the manifold contributions of Jews to civilization, to the endless array of cultures and communities which have, across the centuries hosted Jews with easy acceptance or even with reluctance. Few are the locations in which Jews have dwelt that do not boast accomplishments in verbal or visual, musical or dramatic, scientific or medical - even athletic - arts associated, at least in part, with those Jews.
