I think it would be fair to first tell what the personal opinion of a painter is - about the other side of the "barricade" (the illustrator’s field) and - secondly - what I think "a great illustration" should be. To answer the first question, there is a sort of psychological and even technical conflict within the mind and heart of a painter who has to work in the field of illustration. Media have become so important, that one has to use them sometimes as a springboard. On the one hand, it is an art of communication, you have to transmit a message which is not your message but the message of such and such authorities. On the other hand, you want to express your personal vision with all the spiritual freedom it requires. It is a hard way. When I look back, I feel satisfied with what I have already achieved, but so unsatisfied with what I still want to achieve. This natural balance between satisfaction and frustration will always remain intact... I do hope so... (D.G.)
